Deep understanding is necessary for foreign language learners reading academic English texts in higher education. A program was designed for this purpose. The principles of the teaching for understanding framework is integrated in this program with the principles of scaffolding instruction together with the scaffolding instructional activities of shared reading, guided-reading and guided writing activities for the purpose of developing students’ deep understanding that is demonstrated through written explanation. A pre-post test was administered twice both before and after the experiment. Qualitative and quantitative interpretations of results reveal that the hypotheses of the study are confirmed and students reached the understanding goals. |
