|b Steriade’s (1993) characterization of the root node of the nasal sonorants by the aperture sequence Ao, A max is found to be counter evidence. Phonetic facts show that nasal consonants are frictionless continuants. This necessitates characterizing their root node by the newly proposed aperture position Aomax. Furthermore, Steriade’s (ibid.) Amax characteristic of the root node of the oral sonorants is amended by reflecting the fact that their production is accompanied by a total velic closure (viz. A°max ). The proposed aperture positions mirror the articulatory features and geometry of the English sonorants.
