المستخلص: This study aims at investigating the effect of using authentic tasks on improving students' speaking skills in EFL classes. Ten authentic speaking tasks were designed and administered to a sample of tenth graders in Egypt with total number of 66 students. A speaking test with an analytic scoring rubric was used to measure students' speaking skills in a pre-test post-test control group design experiment. Results of the study revealed that students in the experimental group out-performed students in the control group indicating that the use of authentic tasks helped students improve their speaking skills: coherence, fluency, grammar usage, vocabulary selection, and pronunciation. Moreover, students reported other benefits of authentic materials including: better self-confidence, reduced speaking apprehension, and increased desire to speak English with friends. The study recommended the incorporation of authentic tasks in EFL speaking courses.
