The objective of this is to show to what extent strategic management is identified and applied in the Egyptian government organization. To attain this objective, the study adopted on descriptive analytical approach based on a sample survey covering central government entities (ministries) with a special attention paid to the ministries of foreign affairs and Civil Aviation Affairs. The survey focused in two questions: 1- Do you exercise strategic management in government agencies? 2- What are the obstacles that prevent the application of strategic management in government agencies? To answer these questions a questionnaire was used as a key tool for data collections. The study population consisted of senior administrative leaders in the above mentioned government entities. The study found the most of the central government agencies do not exercise strategic management, according to (52%) of the other (48%) indicated that there are weaknesses in the practice of some activities related to the formulation and implementation of the strategy. Moreover the study showed that the most important reasons that prevent application of the strategic management are: Lack of specialists in strategic planning. Absence of competition that creates the incentive of having to prepare a strategy, in addition to the absence of written and well-known vision and mission for the organization based on what has been reached from the results, the study recommends the need to adopt effective strategies oriented to each government agency to achieve its strategic objectives in addition to the interest in collecting and updating data on a regular bases, and work to reduce the obstacles that prevent the application of strategic management, and the creation of a system strategic information to work on and analyzing the external environment surrounding government agencies, data, and continues training of senior leadership and stuff on the preparation of effective strategies as well as their implementation.
