|b Learning strategies play a vital role in effective learning. A learner's fluency level in the target language increases vocabulary improvement. Exploring the strategies learners use to acquire new words provides insights into how these could be incorporated into the teaching of vocabulary. The present study investigates the frequency of various vocabulary learning strategies used by Saudi EFL students at the University of Hafr Al-Batin. The results show that the participants are moderate users of learning strategies with social strategies being most frequently employed. Conscious and repeated study of new vocabulary items is the participants' preferred method of vocabulary learning. Further investigation into vocabulary learning strategies could help improve vocabulary teaching and assist teachers in making good use of the time learners invest in studying unfamiliar words.
