المستخلص: We live in a world where time is scarce and people need lots of things to be done in a short time. Different machine translation technologies has eased the way of communication between various cultures with different languages. With the use of Microsoft translator and Google Translate, we believe that we can translate any text of any kind from one language to another. But is machine translation of quality? Can we use it with literary texts? The accuracy and usefulness of machine translation are still controversial as the language of literature is concerned. For this purpose, this study evaluates the accuracy and quality of machine translation of literary texts, considering both its limitations and potentials, compared with human-made translation. The challenge in literary translation is not only to maintain the meaning as in other types of translation like technical, scientific or legal translation but also the implied and contextual meaning. To do this, a machine translation system has been chosen, namely, Google Translate, for it is most widely used... Automatic translation was first generated by Google Translate then compared to human- translation. This study is based on a corpus of seven texts taken from different literary genres of various well -known authors in English and Arabic. Adopting Nada’s modal (1964) to assess the quality of translation. The results indicate that various lexical and syntactical errors are produced that cannot be avoided and may have a kind of negative impact on the reliability of machine translation system.
