المستخلص: The present paper aims to investigate whether or not online education has promoted learning autonomy in Algerian University students. The hypothesis on which this paper is based is that students will develop characteristics of learning autonomy due to online learning imposed by COVID 19 pandemic consequences. To investigate this premise, a questionnaire is administered to a sample of second year students from the ENS of Constantine. The results obtained have disconfirmed this hypothesis; that is online education imposed due to the COVID 19 pandemic consequences has not promoted autonomous learning in Algerian University students. Major components of autonomous learning were missing in the students’ behaviour during face-to-face teaching and the situation did not change during the pandemic.
