المستخلص: تبحث هذه الدراسة في مبحث من أهم مباحث علم الأصوات ألا وهو المقطع في الدراسات اللغوية التراثية، والدرس اللغوي الحديث؛ للكشف عن حقيقة معرفة لغويينا القدامى للمقطع مصطلحا ووظيفة، وطبيعة هذه المعرفة عند علماء العربية من فلاسفة ولغويين، فانطلقنا من مؤلفاتهم؛ لالتقاط تلك الإشارات المتفرقة التي بثت فيها لنتبين طبيعة معرفتهم للمقطع معتمدين المنهج الوصفي. وقد قسمت هذه الدراسة إلى مقدمة، وتمهيد، ومبحثين. تحدثت في المبحث الأول عن مفهوم المقطع وطبيعته في الدرس اللغوي الحديث، وعرضت في المبحث الثاني مفهوم المقطع وطبيعته في الدرس اللغوي والفلسفي العربي القديم، وختمت هذا البحث بجملة من النتائج التي تمخضت عنه، وتتلخص في أن المقطع عند اللغويين جاء بدلالات متعددة تختلف عما وقر في الدرس الصوتي الحديث، فجاء بمعنى المخرج، وبمعنى مواضع قطع الصوت، وبمعنى الحركة والسكون في العروض، وقد استعمل بمعناه اللغوي الدال على الفصل والتجزئة. أما الفلاسفة فقد عرفوا المقطع بمعناه الاصطلاحي الحديث. وبهذا نثبت للفلاسفة العرب سبق معرفتهم به، ولا نثبت ذلك للغويين العرب.

This study deals with one of the most important topics in Phonology; the syllable in the traditional and the modern linguistic studies. It highlights the status of the ancient Arab linguist's knowledge of the syllable in terms of terminology and a function, the nature of this knowledge among the Arab philosophers and linguists. Through adopting the descriptive approach, the books of these scholars served as the main source for the information by collecting the dispersed signposts that were spread in order to manifest the nature of their knowledge with regard to syllables. The study is divided into an introduction, preface, two chapters and a conclusion. The first chapter is on the concept of the syllable and its nature in modern linguistics. While the second chapter deals with the concept of the syllable and its nature in the ancient Arabic linguistic and philosophical studies. The study concludes with a number of results and findings, the most important of which can be summarized as that the syllable comes with several meanings different from that of modern phonology according to ancient Arab linguists. It comes in the sense of place of articulation, places of the pauses, vowels and consonants in prosody. Moreover, the ancient Arab linguists used the syllable's linguistic indication of separation and division. Ancient Arab philosophers, on the other hand, define syllable, as a term, similar to its modern linguistic concept. This proves that the ancient Arab philosophers have the precedency, in the knowledge of the syllable, over the ancient Arab linguists.
