This study sought to identify the effect of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) as integrated with task-based learning (TBL) versus computer-assisted instruction run by a traditional instructional method on the speaking performance of the Saudi EFL learners. Two experimental groups and a control group, each comprising of 30 students from Makah high school District were involved in the study. Participants in one experimental group (traditional method integrated with CAI) were exposed to a traditional method of instruction involving presentation and indoctrination in a computer-based environment. Participants in the second experimental group (TBL integrated with CAI) studied in a collaborative, task-based fashion integrated with computer-assisted instruction. The control group subjects studied in a traditional, teacher-centered classroom free of computers. The experiment continued for one semester, spanning a time period of 12 weeks. The experimental group, which received instruction utilizing the TBL and CAI outperformed both the first experimental group and the control group on the posttest of speaking performance.
