Dans l’ensemble de ses romans on relève une volonté d’exprimer cette double appartenance dans ses forts et ses faibles moments. L’arabe comme un chant secret : ce constat qui revient régulièrement ponctuer la pensée de Sebbar fait figure de mot de passe, de sésame. Résonnant comme un appel, il est le point de départ d’une poignante méditation sur les racines, l’expression de ses nostalgies et de ses craintes de l’avenir. Elle revient souvent sur son exil et sur les souvenirs de son enfance, dans la recherche d’une appartenance à une société qu’elle n’a pas su intégrer ; une recherche permanente de son identité exprimée par le biais des personnes et de la terre

Arabic as a secret song, this autobiographical book by the French-Algerian writer Leïla Sebbar, describes in detail the painful path she had to take to try to recover the paternal legacy. In all of her novels there is a desire to express this double belonging in its strong and weak moments. Arabic as a secret song: this observation, which regularly highlights Sebbar's thought, appears to be a password, a sesame.
