520 |b The Academic entrepreneurship (AE) is increasingly becoming a part of the strategic mission of many universities, and the breadth of stakeholders involved in stimulating entrepreneurial behaviors among academic researchers has increasingly expanded. The reason for interest in academic entrepreneurship usually centers on the reported economic benefits arising from the commercialization of science and technological knowledge. Some scholars argue that involving academic scientists in commercial activities solves some imperfections in the transmission of knowledge, and motivates researchers to undertake projects with greater economic and social relevance. However, little is known about the factors that contribute to the development of the entrepreneurial skills among academic scientists. Other scholars, by contrast, are skeptical about the ability of academics to manage commercial activities, while at the same time abiding by the rules and missions of academia. The aim of the present paper is to provide practitioners and researchers with a comprehensive framework outlining its basic characteristics and the rationale for adopting it. The present paper presents a multi-stage process model of academic entrepreneurship to identify the activities, actors, and key success factors associated with how best to set up Entrepreneurship programs in universities. It also outlines an agenda for additional research on various aspects of academic entrepreneurship in terms of system, university and individual levels.
