Word-by-word translation from L1 into English is one of the impediments that lead students to think in Arabic and make up utterances that make no sense in English. This study aims to explore the reasons underlying EFL students’ use of word-byword translation as well as its negative effect on their written productions in terms of meaning and language structure. Accordingly, this research has been carried out quantitatively and qualitatively by means of a questionnaire and a writing assignment. The findings showed that translation prevents EFL learners from using the English language appropriately. |
