This study aimed at answering the following question “ what is the effect of concentrating understanding mathematical problem Based on cooperative way, achievement level, and interaction between them on the ability of ninth grade students in solving mathematical problems. The sample of the study consisted of 71 ninth grade students distributed into two sections in Amman Directorate of Education during the academic year 2002/2003, The expermental group were taught by using the target strategy while the control group were taught by the traditional method. Both groups took the achievement test which was developed by the researcher. Two way analysis of variance(ANOVA) was used to analyze the data, results showed that there were statistically significant differences in ninth grade students abilities to solve mathematical problems and the difference were in favor to the expermintal group who were taught by concentrating on understanding problems solving based on the cooperative way , however no statically significant differences were found due to the interaction between the target method and achievement level
